All road users, motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists are being warned they are entering the worst time of the year for road deaths and injuries on our roads.

European Mobility Week 2009 takes place from September 16 to 22 and the aim of the week is to encourage people in towns and cities all over Europe to get out of their cars and move to a more sustainable means of transport. This year, for the first time, Castlebar is participating in this exciting new project and it is hoped that the people of Castlebar will participate and really get behind this. “We're encouraging people to get out of their cars, and walk or cycle to work and school for this week and into the future,” said Noel Gibbons, Road Safety Officer with Mayo County Council.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) will be holding the third European Night Without Accident on Saturday October 17 as part of Irish Road Safety Week. The initiative is aimed at promoting responsible behaviour behind the wheel among young adults.

The road safety department of Mayo County Council is reminding trick or treaters that the major dangers at Hallowe’en are not from ghosts and goblins, but rather pedestrian/vehicle collisions. To date this year 28 pedestrians have been killed on Irish roads.
